Department of Engineering

B.S. in Engineering Curriculum

The Department of Engineering offers a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (B.S.E.) degree with concentrations in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical engineering.

The Engineering curriculum consists of a core section and a concentration section. The core courses are required for all engineering concentrations and include study in English, chemistry, physics, mathematics, humanities, and basic engineering sciences. Core courses extend from the freshman year into the senior year. The concentration courses form a coherent unit in chemical, civil, electrical or mechanical engineering and are taken in the junior and senior years.

An evening undergraduate engineering program was created in response to inquiries from the community. The Department of Engineering works with students on a case-by-case basis to see that all courses needed for the degree will be offered during evening hours.

The program of study for all students enrolled in the BSE curriculum consists of two parts (1) a common core and (2) a sequence of courses in one of the four concentrations offered by the Department of Engineering. The 74-hours of courses in the common core are listed below; followed by the additional courses required in the respective concentrations.

Total Hours in Engineering Degree 128

1Students with an ACT mathematics score of 18 (Enhanced ACT 22) or higher must take the advanced placement test in mathematics to determine placement in MATH 170 and/or MATH 175, or in MATH 190. Those students not meeting the prerequisite requirements for MATH 190 should substitute the lower level math courses for the humanities electives in the first semester of the freshman year and reschedule these electives in later semesters. The advanced mathematics elective must be selected from the approved list available through the student’s advisor. These electives may be specified in some concentrations.

2Humanities and Social Sciences electives must meet the requirements of the Louisiana Board of Regents and of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). A list of the approved electives is maintained by the Department and is given to the student through the advising process. These electives may be taken in any semester. Also see University Core Requirements listed in this Catalog. ABET will not allow skills type courses for Fine Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences electives. A two-course sequence must be taken in Social Sciences or Humanities.

4Chemical Engineering Concentration (57 hours):

CHEG 210, 311, 313, 314, 403, 405, 407, 409, 411, 412, CHEG Elective 3 sem. hours; CHEM 301, 301L, 310, 390, 391, ENGR 303, 306, 311, 315. Total hours for major: 37

Chemical concentration students select either MATH 322 or STAT 441 for the advanced mathematics elective.

6Electrical Engineering Concentration (57 hours):

ELEN 205,260, 302, 304, 330, 340, 341, 355,410, ELEN elective 6 sem. hours; ENGR 303, 306, 430, 475; MATH 322; PHYS 212; Technical electives 9 sem. hours. Total hours for major: 38

Electrical Engineering concentration students may select the advanced mathematics elective from any MATH 400-level course with the consent of the advisor. Appropriate selection of this elective can enable the student to obtain a minor in mathematics. The ELEN/ENGR electives must be approved by the advisor and may be selected to provide specific studies in computer engineering topics, power engineering topics, and control system engineering topics.
