The McNeese Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education grades 1-5 is designed to give you the instructional and practical knowledge and experience you need to become a successful teacher. Thanks to a partnership with two national education consulting firms, our degree program provides candidates with the most current research-based best-practices and knowledge within the field of education, including diversity in the classroom, methodology in reading, social studies, language arts, math, science, approaches to manage the elementary classroom and approaches to managing exceptional children.

With 210 hours of field experience featured in the curriculum, a two-semester teacher residency in an elementary classroom and initial teacher certification, our program ensures you’ll graduate ready to step into your career.

Featuring faculty advising, small class sizes and an emphasis on experiential learning, the bachelor’s degree in elementary education Grades 1-5 at McNeese offers students the experience and training needed to succeed in the classroom before and after graduation.

Service Learning:

Every semester, students have the chance to participate in a community service activity such as Habitat for Humanity, food drives, tutoring and more. Community service is also a core component in a student’s Senior Residency Portfolio, which includes a service learning project created and fulfilled by the student.

In-depth Instruction:

With a state approved Tier 1 curriculum, instruction includes promoting student engagement using theory and motivation along with procedures and transitions that goes beyond traditional classroom management courses. Curriculum also includes topics like student misconceptions, alignment of standards, outcomes, instruction and assessment and progression of learning.

Residency Experience:

All elementary education majors receive hands-on training in their field with a two- semester teacher residency. During this residency, students are paired with experienced teachers who assist in classroom management and teaching. Students also have support from their university supervisors who evaluate and give feedback with a pre- and post-conference model, as well as help from an additional faculty member who guides student research into best-practices for their own student populations.

Excellence With a Personal Touch:

McNeese’s award-winning education faculty in the Burton College of Education stay up-to-date in their disciplines through continuing research, publications and attendance and presentations at multiple national, state and local conferences. With small class sizes and faculty advising, students get one-on-one instruction in education methods, practices, observation, evaluation and personalized support. After completing the program, faculty continue to support alumni as they venture out into the professional setting, providing alumni with a support system that follows them throughout their career.

What Can You Do with an Elementary Education Grades 1-5 Degree?

As an elementary education graduate, you'll have the training and qualifications to immediately begin working in public, private or charter elementary schools. Or, continue your education to qualify for higher salary or administrative positions in education.

Farrar Hall, which houses the Burton College of Education, features three on-site computer labs equipped with 3D printers, Promethean panels, poster makers and more – everything you need to be prepared to bring technology into your classroom after graduation.

Student Organizations

Elementary education majors can join their peers in a number of student organizations on campus, including education-specific organizations like the Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana and Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education.
