MSU Student Publication Policy
Mission

McNeese State University students are protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which ensures freedom of expression. McNeese student publications provide an opportunity for students to ask questions and exchange ideas while abiding by legal and ethical standards of responsible journalism as a forum of expression.

Student publications are accorded the privileges of covering news and gaining access to news from all sources on the McNeese campus. Accuracy and truth are the main goals of all McNeese State University student publications. In addition, the adviser to student publications adheres to the Code of Ethics of College Media Advisers Inc.

Contraband Online Site

Official student publications are The Contraband, student newspaper, and The Log, student yearbook. Both publications began in 1939 and are not affiliated with an academic department. Staff positions are open to all majors. The content of the publications are protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which ensures freedom of expression. However, the students are obligated to abide by the legal and ethical standards of responsible journalism. The executive editors are selected by the MSU Editorial Advisory Board, comprised of faculty, students and a member of the professional media, which is under the auspices of the Vice President of Development and Public Affairs. The adviser to student publications is the Director of Public Information and Communications.

MSU Editorial Advisory Board

The MSU Editorial Advisory Board is responsible for the selection of qualified editors-in-chief for The Contraband and The Log. The board also has the power to dismiss an editor with due process. It serves to protect the campus press from attempts to censor or exert prior restraint. However, the board shall not be held responsible or accountable for incidents that may result in legal or academic reprisal. The board does not involve itself in the internal operations of the campus press. The board is composed of five faculty or staff appointed by the Vice President of Development and Public Affairs, with at least one member from the following areas: the College of Liberal Arts; the College of Science; College of Engineering and Technology or College of Nursing; the College of Education or Business; and the Library. The board reports to the Vice President of Development and Public Affairs. In addition, other members appointed for three-year terms include a member of the professional media, the SGA President, a SUB representative and the Vice President of Development and Public Affairs. The Student Publications Adviser serves ex-officio and as chair.
