Majoring in Philosophy

Philosophy majors are trained in a number of skills that make them highly competitive in professional life and higher education. They routinely perform well on standardized tests for professional degrees.
McNeese State University currently offers no formal programs in philosophy, but will be adopting formal programs in the near future. Significant steps have been made towards an official minor and major program, and these programs should be available for the 2010-2011 catalogue.

Minors

The minor has essentially been approved, and is currently being designed by the philosophy faculty. Tentatively, the minor will have the following requirements:

  • PHIL-102 Critical Thinking -or- PHIL-334 Formal Logic
  • PHIL-201 Introduction to Philosophy
  • 4 PHIL Electives

Majors

The College of Liberal Arts is currently planning to use the existing Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies to offer tracks in particular disciplines, including philosophy. The Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies is currently offered through the Department of History.

The philosophy faculty met with the Dean of Liberal Arts and members of other faculty within different disciplines and have reached a tentative curriculum. The major will involve 33 credits of coursework in Philosophy, including a capstone course, on top of the core requirements for the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies. Once the proposal has been fully endorsed, the full details will be made available here. We thank those students and other individuals who were key in bringing about this extraordinary opportunity for McNeese State University Students.
