Placement Testing

The Smart Choice

McNeese State University uses a variety of tools to determine placement into college-level English and Mathematics courses. Placement is just one of the factors used to determine admission into the university. The placement tests McNeese accepts are ACT, SAT, ACCUPLACER, and ALEKS.

ACT

The ACT is a standardized test that measures a student’s knowledge in English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science Reasoning. McNeese uses your ACT English score to determine placement into English classes and your ACT Math score to determine placement into Mathematics classes. The ACT is also used in determining eligibility for TOPS and academic scholarships.

McNeese regularly hosts ACT testing on campus. Students must follow all directions provided by ACT for registration, identification, check-in, and related testing matters. Visit www.act.org for testing dates, more information and to register.

To submit your ACT score to McNeese, use McNeese Code 1594.

SAT

The SAT is a standardized test that measures a student’s skills in Writing, Critical Reading, and Mathematics. McNeese uses your SAT Evidence Based Reading and Writing section score to determine placement into English classes and your SAT Math section score to determine placement into Mathematics classes.

Visit collegereadiness.collegeboard.org for testing dates, more information, and to register.

To submit your SAT score to McNeese, use McNeese Code 6403

ACCUPLACER

The Accuplacer is a computer-based test that determines your knowledge of math and writing as you prepare to enroll in a college-level course. McNeese doesn’t use the Accuplacer to decide whether to admit a student or not; instead, the test is taken by students who have already been accepted but need to be enrolled in courses of the correct difficulty level. By having students take the Accuplacer test, colleges can ensure that they’re placing students in the most appropriate courses and the students won’t be overwhelmed by classes that are too difficult or bored by classes that are too easy.

Visit our Accuplacer page, www.mcneese.edu/testing/accuplacer/, or the Accuplacer website, accuplacer.collegeboard.org/students, for more information about the test.

ALEKS PPL

ALEKS is an online assessment and learning tool used to measure your strengths and weaknesses in Mathematics. After your initial assessment, you will then have a chance to work on those weaknesses using the ALEKS “Preparation and Learning Modules.”

Visit our ALEKS page, www.mcneese.edu/testing/aleks/, or the ALEKS website, aleks.com/, for more information about the test.

Ashley Bass

I am a McNeese graduate with a bachelor's degree in Family and Consumer Science and a concentration in Child and Family Studies. As a student, I competed on the rodeo team and served on the SGA board. I earned my master’s degree in 2022 from the University of South Dakota in Educational Administration and Leadership with a concentration in Adult and Higher Ed. I have over 13 years of experience in adult education and 20 years of educational experience.

My favorite part of being a Freshman Advisor is helping students navigate their new life routine as a college freshman by offering support with in-person office visits or by email to help students meet their goals. I always remind students of my favorite BB King quote – “Education is one thing no one can ever take away from you.”  I believe that supporting students is vital to a student's success.

In my spare time, I raise registered American Brahman cattle, and I enjoy all the "country girl" things like hunting, fishing, growing a garden and cooking.
