McNeese State University’s bachelor’s degree in sociology with a concentration in family science curriculum has been reapproved by the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR). Family science graduates will continue to be eligible for the Certified Family Life Educator professional certification without having to take the exam or complete extra coursework.
This professional credential is recognized throughout the U.S. and Canada and provides an advantage when McNeese graduates are seeking jobs in family life education and related fields, according to Dr. Ilya A. Okhotnikov, assistant professor of family science.
Family science is the area of social science that focuses on the development, conflict management and formation and maintenance of relationships, especially in the family setting. Students majoring in family science learn the skills needed to help families – including nuclear, single-parent, childless, extended and more – develop and grow in a variety of circumstances and settings. This degree is offered 100% online.
An important part of the curriculum is the capstone internship course. Internships are intentionally matched to the student’s professional interests, career goals and geographic location with 64 partner agencies available.
Degree holders can work as a family life educator in courts and corrections systems, government agencies, human or administrative services, health agencies, military-related organizations, policy analysis or education.
